We Will Live Forever

anGie seah

9 November - 3 December

Born in 1979, anGie seah is distinctive in the continually evolving line-up of art and artists from Singapore. anGie engages her concerns through platforms that appear as diverse as they are illimitable such as community centered workshops that have become an increasingly essential component in her practice in recent years. This, in addition to traditional methods she is known to employ such as ceramics making, drawing, painting, sculpting, sound, music, performance, video and installation art.

We Will Live Forever transpired from an intimate meditation stirred by the tribulations of prophet Jonah in its Islamic context. Although incomparable to the legend of Jonah, anGieís personal battle is dotted by a shuffling of overlapping responsibilities as artist, woman, spouse, daughter and Muslim of Chinese lineage.

Evocative drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos and photographs come together in We Will Live Forever as coded analogies and berthing markers, mostly indicating anGieís personal dialogues on subjects of time, spirit, kinship, purpose and being. This expansive repertoire of media used may appear schizophrenic; but in fact, they are strategic, multi-dimensional means in achieving personal and artistic resolution. Here, as an artist, anGie seah demonstrates the activation of art as help devices and tools in the arbitration of both personal and collective loss.

anGie has exhibited, taken part in artist residencies and participated in art festivals such as Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan (2015), Musee d'Art Contemporain de Lyon and Palais de Tokyo, France (2015), Galeria Labirynt, Poland (2013), Singapore Biennale (2013) and Venice Biennale (2013).
