solo exhibition by Joo Choon lin

09 March - 02 April 2017

The Blinking Organisms - You SPLEEN Me' Round X OPERATION 1 (Belief System) is Joo Choon Lin’s first solo exhibition at Chan + Hori Contemporary. A graduate of Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, UK, Choon Lin has shown in various prestigious institutions and exhibitions including Paradise Sans Promesse, Frac de Pays de la Loire, Nantes, France (2015); Be Mysterious, The Banff Centre, Canada (2014), 4th Singapore Biennale, Singapore (2013), Resolution of Reality, Hermes Gallery, Singapore (2012), Roving Eye, Sorlandets Kunstmuseum, Norway (2011); 4th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, Japan (2009) and the 1st Aichi Triennale, Japan (2010).

The first of a three part installation series, Choon Lin continues her exploration of perception and realities, this time with spleen, the purple coloured human organ as inspiration. In English, to ‘vent one’s spleen’ is metaphor for the release of anger or frustration. The Talmud refers to it as the ‘organ of laughter’, while ancient Greeks associates it with one’s melancholy. Meanwhile, in biological terms, the spleen facilitates our immune system by recycling old red blood cells and storing platelets and white blood cells.

Despite its size (similar to a fist) and serving an important biological function, some people are actually born without one and most could continue living normally if it were removed for medical reasons. In the exhibition, Choon Lin’s interest in morphogenesis, or the design and growth of cells and organs is once again manifested here in synthetic and sculptural form. The ‘spleen’ in her hand is a multi-layered installation, made up of sculptures with parts hung in chains, responding and vibrating to sound amidst blinking lights. Indicative of a mirror, a video of a life-sized, cropped female torso in skin coloured satin dress, biting and chewing on a carrot foregrounds and completes the viewer’s personal experience with the quirky sculpture.

It is a fact that despite all advances in knowledge and technologies, we continue to live in a sea of unknowns and unseen, where even the parts that makes us who we are physically and mentally as persons remain hidden beneath our very skin. As with most of her previous artwork, The Blinking Organisms - You SPLEEN Me' Round X OPERATION 1 (Belief System) demands an openness to the way we perceive and respond to such matter. Her art invites personal immersion, both of the body and mind; to beget a load of questions, poetic and otherwise.

The second part of the installation series, The Blinking Organisms X You SPLEEN Me' Round, Operation 2, will be displayed at The Concourse in Esplanade, from 12 April to 2 July 2017. There will be a performance on 14 May 2017, Saturday at 1pm (30 mins, Free).
