Roads Around A Mountain

"I am looking for a place that embodies a true and perfect rest. Yet this place is elusive to me. I cannot behold it fully, I see only in snapshots and fragments. Through broken images and poor reflections, I try to make up the whole. It is a tall mountain that I cannot summit, because I cannot breathe up there. I cannot tunnel through either, because I don’t know where to start. I can only walk around it, like a circumambulating pilgrim.

In the past two years of being grounded, I went back to methods I used as a child to peer into the outside world, through landscapes, books, Google maps and images found on the Internet. Old images of places from my phone function like a loci memoriae, they help me recall experiences of majesty. The provenance of harvested material points to a secret world beyond what I can see. Painting has historically been used to transform commonplace materials into images of the transcendental. Similarly, these elements come together in my paintings to become the roads that coil around this elusive mountain of true and perfect rest, paved while sweating in my living room."
