Om Mee Ai

27 October - 27 November 2010

Om (born 1969, Seoul) is a Korean artist based in Singapore. Her oil paintings are composed of patiently executed abstract but orderly structures in uniform monochrome tones. Meticulously working over translucent layers of colour, the artist works fastidiously through an intricately formulated process of taping, layering, and wiping off paint - the culmination of which results in a formal assemblage of colour, texture, and improvised geometric grids. She begins with several canvases, working simultaneously on each piece, which may take up to three months to complete.

Om obtained a Master of Fine Art (Painting), The Open University, UK (2006) after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University (2003) and a Diploma in Fine Art (Painting), LASALLE College of the Arts. Since then she has participated in several group and solo exhibitions and been awarded several recognitions. Om has won the prestigious UOB Painting of the Year Competition three times in the Abstract Medium category in 2003, and consecutively in 2006 and 2007.

Her artworks are held in important collections such as the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), SAM Art Bank Collection, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Manpower, United Overseas Bank, Philip Morris Singapore, European Financial Group, INSEAD Business School (Asia Campus), and Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Singapore and Jakarta, Indonesia.
