At the Violet Hour
Solo Exhibition By Cristene Chang Hoei
7 - 31 May 2015
Continuing our commitment to identifying Singaporean artists at crucial stages of their artistic development, Chan Hampe Galleries presents a solo exhibition of veteran mixed-media artist and printmaker Cristene Chang Hoei (b.1942) whose art practice spans over three decades.
This follows Cristene’s United Overseas Bank (UOB) Painting of the Year 2014 Bronze Award and her inclusion in the Women Artists in Singapore publication (by Bridget Tracy Tan) and related exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum. This curated selection by Benjamin Hampe is drawn from key series and ideas Cristene has pursued from the 1990s to the present.
For the first time in any exhibition of her works, the influence of literary writing in Cristene’s practice is addressed. References to mythology from TS Eliot and Rudyard Kipling to Goh Poh Seng as well as to the artist’s own life and travels emerge — demonstrating how her artistic practice is shaped and energised by a range of sources outside the parameters of the visual arts.
Cristene is a Fine Art graduate from Middlesex University London and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Her work is included in the public and corporate collections of Singapore Art Museum; Monetary Authority of Singapore; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ministry of Community Development; High Commission of Singapore (Malaysia); Nanyang Academy of Fine Art; UOB; Development Bank of Singapore; Lloyd’s Insurance; Remark Insurance Company; Baker & Mackenzie; Philip Morris; SingTel; Shell Petroleum; DDB Needham; Golden Village; Schmidt Scientific; Scotts Holdings; Capital Square; and WingTai Asia.
